9:53p me and my big mouth...
Coming back from dinner and we stopped off at the after-hours playing room. I decided to take a gander at the Division 1 Roto, mainly for the nostalgia factor. They were either in the second or third round (of five) and I noticed my name near the bottom of the second grouping. I figured pretty good odds I wouldn't be selected.
Or so I figured before I said the following (out loud, no doubt): "$10 to the person who picks me!" A couple picks later, Lisa Odom took the bait. I slipped her husband the sawbuck and left.
After the draft was over, ftangredi came up to me and said he was ready to announce my name but Lisa beat him to it. See what money will do? ;)

8:02p lol@life
so, i arrive at JFK, and my flight says CANCELED on it, even though i had just checked on it a few hours before and everything was fine. thoughts of them telling me there were no more flights and that i'd have to come back tomorrow kept swimming through my head, but Jet Blue has to be better than that, right? they didn't cancel it because of "weather", they canceled it because airlines can't afford to fly flights that aren't full --- they just moved as many people as possible to the later orlando flights (which they had 4 of) and then people like me who miss the cutoff get told to come back tomorrow -- which is what the ticket counter lady told me.
"NO, i have to be there today, it is important"
well, she got me a flight to Fort Lauderdale that was leaving in 30 minutes. i snatched it and ran through security and barely made boarding. And now I'm sitting here in the Fort Lauderdale airport which thankfully has free Wi-Fi and going to figure out what to do next. I'm gonna try to convince Jet Blue to pay for my rental car to Orlando -- luckily it's only 215 miles to the hotel.
I HATE AIRLINES.
if anyone who is in Orlando sees this PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure i'm registered...

1:30p cheapness
so if you don't want to take that shuttle which takes like more than an hour anyways, go to golynx.com and look for an itinerary from the airport to the hotel. "Link 42", a bus, takes about an hour to get from the airport to within a mile from the hotel, then you walk the last mile. i might just do it.

11:43a In Betweener
People 15 years older than me or less are Baby Boomers. We know all about them. People 15 years younger than me or less are Generation Xers. We know about them.
I'm an in-betweener. Do you want to know why we are the way WE are? This type of thing was on television all the time when I was four: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iv6GhRDERsk
And we got to watch a lot of television.

It is rare that a comic book movie is actually ABOUT something. This was an excellent film. I don't want to say any more.

8:36a Sexism IV
This is old news, but I guess I want it here for my own reference.
Lap has found it hard to impossible to buy clothes for Frances that are great for playing in. Frances likes dresses, which is cool by us, so we have some nice dresses for her to wear. But when it comes time to get things like - oh, I don't know - PANTS for her to tumble around in and abuse... nothing sturdy. Little boy clothes? No problem. And it isn't just the material. Girl pants are low-waisted and tight in the thigh so they can't easily lift their legs and climb.
And my daughter loves to climb - one of our friends calls her "Fearless Francie." The L. buys her boy's jeans. (I just asked Laurel if that were still true. Francie asked, "but... but... I'm a girl... why do I wear boy pants?" In two years, she will not want to wear them. She is uncomfortable when I take her into a mens room.)
And I refuse to call her a "tomboy" or any crap like that. She is a girl, she likes being a girl, and she has many interests that are traditionally girly. "Is the big garbage can the little one's mamma? Can I be the mamma garbage can and you be the baby?" But I refuse to concede that wanting to climb and play and tumble are "tomboy" activities - those are "kid" activities (and adult activities, at least until the adult discovers puzzlepirates.com) And it seems the whole world is trying to get her to stop being a kid and climbing and playing. And it is a crime.

2:25a the mojo's back
After sucking at Scrabble and losing way too many games for seemingly forever, I finally had a good warmup day just before leaving for the Nats. Swept three from cesarsalad at the Comfort Diner, and then went 3-1 at the club.

12:48a HYPOCHONDRIACAL - ACCHHIPY
Leaving in about seven hours to begin my journey.
I don't know if I shall sleep.
Why is it that EVERY time I step onto an airplane, I spend the night immediately preceding the trip alternately procrastinating and packing?
Also, in my absence I leave you this image. I can't look away whenever I see it.

While she was playing right next to me, Debbie Stegman had JOYPOP on her rack. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to play it. Not to be outdone, I bingoed a few minutes later with FREEBASE.

11:16p OMG Nationals '08 Liveblogging teh Official!
Well, okay, hyperbole aside. Life is good. Invited my younger brother and sister over for dinner tonight. I cooked steaks, rice, and asparagus, to very nice reviews. I don't know what to say. You have to understand: I'm known in my family as the one who doesn't/can't cook. My mother and especially my father are masterly in the kitchen. Both my two brothers and my one sister have shone brightly in their own rights. My lame ass lives off the tender mercies of restaurants, or even convenience stores. It's a long-enduring family joke. So yeah, that's a step forward. A baby step, since nothing in the evening's cuisine required any art from me, but in matters culinary, for me, a baby step might as well be taken on the moon. Yeah! Mary (my sis) chose a good shiraz*, jeez why in the sam hell is that word not good, for us. I helped my sibs drink it, and then we repaired to John's place so Mary could take a tour of the new rental house he and his gf just got. I ensured that the most important room is in order - that is the garage converted to a studio/rehearsal space for my brother's band. By the way, they can be found here:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=6973418
My rockin' little bro John is the bassist.
So yeah, John and I joyously split a further six-pack of Negro (EDIT: d'oh! I misspoke, thought that looked funny, make that Negra) Modelos. He conked out, and Amie and I watched the rest of a Sleuth network film where Sally Field eventually revenge-kills Kiefer Sutherland for raping and killing her daughter. Sort of Lifetime network with an edge, I guess. I don't have a TV, so these treats, such as they are, are rare. Picked up my acoustic guitar, which I'd loaned to the band for a few weeks - they had to fire a drummer and had to fulfill some commitments with acoustic gigs, including one in Denver last weekend that turned out quite well. Glad my gear could help. Hell, if my lame ass hasn't gigged in five years, might as well be helping someone else. Hard to believe, since I played out from age 18 to 33 pretty consistently. Ah well, it'll be there when I feel like re-entering the game. See, I got this *other* game...I'll have both in effect soon enough, when the time is right. Damn my stupid perfectionism.
So yeah, my flight outta Dodge comes at 7 am. Not a morning person. I could try to sleep, but what fer - I can catch up tomorrow on planes and in Orlando. I have not shat to do on the morrow, and in this I take deep solace. At this point it's liveblogging, dishes, laundry, packing (dammit, ordered a perfectly good Slayer shirt that didn't get here in time - my W-L record in metal gear is slammin', wanted to take it to ludicrous speed), maybe a late night clothes raid at Wal-Mart (yeah, laugh, mofos# - two years ago this time, I got three shirts there, two of which multiple women - you know, the people whose sartorial opinions *matter* - have complimented me on, and the third one I lost in the hubbub in Phoenix back in aught-six)...and then a first - Gold's Gym, comme d'habitude, but at 2 am with a buzz. Probably will have the run of the facility to myself. An acceptable level of ecstasy.
So right now, just enjoying various Pandora stations and blogging to you here. "Save A Prayer" is playing now. Ahhh...yeah, certain early 80s music is flat-out comfort food to me...oh wait, it just got better, "Old and Wise" is on now. Alan Parsons Project. That shit's just *beautiful*.

Frustration will have to wait until next week, because I have to sleep now and go through five more critiques tomorrow and then all the closing stuff for TNEO and a horse show on Sunday and a visit to Bar Harbor Monday. And so forth.
But I am appalled by Hasbro's suit today, and I just couldn't go to sleep without at least making note of it. It's a trivial thing to come up with a physical design that is not infringement, and it's creeping up on time to do so. There is a small chance that Hasbro's timing is coincidence, but having this hit the day before Nationals really bugs the crap out of me. It really casts a shadow over what Hasbro would claim: that they have the best interests of the Scrabble community at heart.
Time to build me a lab.
ETA: I'm actually pleased that it has come to a legal battle. It doesn't seem possible for Hasbro to win this on the copyright front. Trademark maybe. But I'm very much hoping it gets far enough to actually give us some clarity on some of the murkier points of the case.
